Hi all,
So, I bought seven Bachman transformers (small black ones with the red handles, #6607) for my Christmas layout over the past few months. Six run the trains, one runs the lights and the trolley relay.
The one that runs the lights works for about a half an hour then shuts off and won't go back on for about another half hour; until it cools down. I switch off the power bar when this happens. Is it due to having too many lights on one transformer? I checked it with a voltmeter, which reads 10-13 with all the lights on.
I bought two more on eBay and when I get them, plan to split the lights up between two transformers instead of using just one.
Another transformer that runs only a gandy dancer gets very hot. I'm thinking of replacing that one also.
All the others work fine and feel pretty cool when in use.
Any thoughts?
Thanks, Mark

I've had problems like this as well with cheaper transformers. That just seems to be the way they are. One of the transformers I used to use was able to get an old Athearn PA-1 half-way around the loop of track and then over-heated/shut-down
I'm sure someone will have a more technical explanation for this, but these symptoms are not uncommon for cheaper transformers.
