Well, geographically, my line wouldn't be a member road of the famous "Appalachian Lines" system, but I can now say it interchanges with one of them:

Found that at the haunt a couple weeks ago. An unassembled McKean kit, with no indication that is was part of a special run or club deal or comission or whatever. Just a factory-lettered box for the V&O.

(For those who don't know, the V&O is a very famous MODEL railroad run by Allen McCleland, who is arguably the John Allen of my time. Look it up sometime; it was and is still groundbreaking on many levels, and has been featured numerous times in all the major model mags throughout the last 20 years. The other two members of the Appalachian Lines are the Virgina Midland, and Tony Koester (yes, that blowhard)'s Allegheny Midland).

Yeah. Wouldn't that be sweet, to be such an accomplished modeler that the manufacturers sneak your own livery out on a car*... [}:)] Hey Athearn:

^ New Athearn 2970 Undec, built & painted by me. With the exception of the COTS stencil (because I was too lazy to add it to my set) EVERYTHING on that car is a custom decal of my design.

*The only other one I'm aware of is Josh Fretag's "Davies Steel" - in coil cars by Walthers... but like this V&O hopper I'm not 100% why/how/when/where those were released.

GiC,
What program are you using to produce your decals? You must have an Alps printer?

I am indeed very fortunate to have an Alps 5000 on "indefinite loan" to me. I don't know what I'd do without it. It was and still is the ONLY way to print white on clear (which is a must for my designs, as you can see). I so wish they would bring something like that to market again. The going rate on used ALPS, even broken ones (which are plentiful), is INSANE - and the company is going to quit supporting them altogether in about a month. Not that I blame them, as even the newest ones are 7-8 years old now.

Which means I should probably stock up on printing decals before it either breaks or is reclaimed by its owner ...

I do all my designs and layouts in Corel Draw - vectors are the only way to go. Although Adobe Photoshop does have the occasional good use, too.

Tony ,
I'd like to hear more about the decal design and printing process. I've posted a decal topic in GICs Corner.

What roadname was that Athearn 2970 Hopper? The Rock? Or is it stripped and painted?

They began life as Undecs. Which sprung a big surprise: I was expecting the word "Undecorated" to mean "[Assembled but] undecorated". WRONG! It's a KIT - one at least as complex, if not even more so, than an Intermountain or similar caliber.

I'd never purchased an Undec version of something not in a "blue box" before, so I guess this is standard practice.

Every tiny little piece (EVERY STIRRUP AND LADDER RUNG) had to be assembled. Which was fine with me - and they are so fragile I would never even THINK of stripping one now - but I was a bit aggravated that even though they paid for niether paint nor assembly, that the price was unchanged.

GREAT cars though. BETTER than Intermountain's version of same.

Anyhow. I used Modelflex D&H blue and my own decals.

I AM waiting for The ROCK versions, though [}:)]
