I don't know how common a practice it is, but much of a brass locomotive is soldered together. The cranks are definitely soldered onto the pin. You can see a lot more of it on the one that's tight, and a lot less on the loose one. In fact, the loose one looks like it was just tinned and wiped clean.

and no i do not collect southern pacific in general,but i like streamliners

It's an easy fix Ken, and certainly the sort of thing you have to expect with old brass. It's a lot easier than soldering boiler detail back on or straightening the pilot.

trouble with those stairs is they are not meant to be straight but these do need a bit of reshaping ken
