Ian;
Do some reading. The TS was designed to be a "game" or "puzzle" to be taken to shows to entertain. It doesn't mimic real world switching at all and was never intended to.
However, if you are putting it on your LO for entertainment that have at it. Doing a search will turn up examples. There actaully is a Train Puzzle page on the web somewhere and it's pretty comprehensive.....

Romcat, I knew it was unrealistic, But I wanted to see if my dad and I and whoever comes to see my layout has any switching skills. I figured out how to do many intresting things with one switch.

The spur at the top was meant to be used separate or joined to another Timesaver. This way two could play at the same time, with the added twist of transferring cars from one side to the other. The purpose was the two sides working together to finish a problem, not competing against each other. John actually didn't care for people who finished too far ahead of the other, believing that it showed a lack of cooperation on their part and not any skill.
You wire it to a throttle through a DPDT center off switch. Once a comfortable switching speed is set, the only thing to operate is direction of travel thru the switch, the speed being already set and the same for all competitors. A REALLY good switch engine is needed, one that is not affected by turnout frogs and minor dirt spots. There is room for up to 9 cars but 5 is usually more fun and not as complex.
BTW...one of the few things that wasn't affected by the fire was John's Timesaver. Apparently it was at Whit Tower's house at the time. It has since been put on display at the NMRA museum.

Ian:
If you want to try small and interesting, try the Carl Aerndt site:
http://carendt.us/scrapbook/linkindex/index.html
Wonderfully sweet and clever man. He emailed me from his hospital bed shortly before he dired last winter. I simply wanted info as I had from him previously and he connected me with the guy I was wanting to talk to. He took time from negotiating his final station stop in this life to answer me. That is breathtaking humility.

Go prowl his site, you'll be fascinated I'm sure.

Wow- Carl passed?
He was a really nice guy. Always friendly, about as genuine as they come. He'll be missed for sure- someone like him is a tough act to follow.
He featured my coffee table layout on his site too- http://carendt.us/scrapbook/page81a/index.html
Again... sad that he passed. But all of us who had the chance to interact with him are better for it based upon what we took away.
