What's the best Athearn diesel out there for placing a GP20 shell on top of? I thought a GP35 would work. What's y'all thoughts?

Justin,
Looks like someone else already tried it. It looks a lot better than stock; only thing I can nitpick is the front truck looks a little shy of the pilot.

I also found an old conversion article from 1982. I never knew about this site.

Yes, that was my conversion on the GP-20 to Athearn power. The chassis I used was from a newer RTR GP-35. A LOT of cutting on the frame, and it was still a tough fit. I think someone else on the forum used an old blue box GP-35 frame. There are some big differences between the two frames; there would be much less to cut, and an easier fit, using the older style.

The BB mechanism is a bit longer than the later one, giving it a kind of "sport" look....

I have 3 different articles on dropping a Tyco GP20 onto an OLD Athearn GP35. Old as in blue box era. Requires only minor modification of the Tyco shell to fit. And much cheaper then using the RTR GP35. PM me your email address and I will scan and send you the articles.
