Last month an article by ChrisC on his AHM center cab rebuild caught my eye, as I am doing the same thing with the same engine (actually with some slight visual changes) with the same original motor. I have replaced the original wires with fresh color-coded( red & black) ones, and have been working on replacing the ancient bulb light with two (fore and aft) LEDs wired w/resistors. Nickelplate759 replied to that article regarding replacing the original plastic worm drive with a single lead Atlas one. Is there a part number for that brass worm and does it fit on the original motor's shaft directly? The idea is to slow the little diesel down from warp factor 10 to something more realistic with the worm change.

This is my first rebuild and I have been learning a lot with it, not to mention having fun.
Any info on this worm replacement and any other thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Ron, and welcome! Fortunately, the seller I bought a batch from still has them.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/350498669339

The worms and the motor shaft are both 2mm, so there's no problem with the fit. They've come in handy many times, like when I discovered they also fit the old Rivarossi Dockside 0-4-0's.

It will halve the switcher's speed, so it will be a much more realistic range than stock.

Hey Ron:

Good for you for jumping in there and working on something! No Smart App for that is there! You must have like a declining number of us; an Amish Gene! It's what my Daughters say about me!

Post some pics....

Thanks for the compliments, boys! Nelson/Nickelplate- I think I just successfully ordered a set of 4 of those worm drives from that EBay seller's site you gave me. I was planning on an engine swap, but for $11.00 and change, this might be better and less complicated.

The others I don't use I will save for later use- can't throw out parts that might be adaptable for other future projects.

I am imaging my rebuild, as ChrisC did, to document it for future uploading.

Again, my thanks.

Ron, here's a shot of one in a GE switcher, and a Riv Dockside.

Have fun with your project.
