Hi, my name is Mike, A friend and I started to build a model railroad back in the early 70's. For some reason we never really got started. I kept all the trains that we had bought. In January 2011 my friend calls up and wants to go to a train show. The fire started up again. Most of what we have are old Tyco trains. I will be asking a lot of questions about how to convert old Tyco locomotives to DCC, if it is possible. Hope to get a lot of help from everyone.

Well, not really! Welcome to our forum Mike! I've been here for 4 years! Now, if you got any engines with a power torque, it can be becuase you can uograde it with a CD-ROM motor, runs quieter, lower speed, and DCC compatible! Remember, old stuff like you have only will handle code 100 track! Mantua engines after a new remotor, you can. hope this helps!

hi, Mike. Upgrading the Power Torque motors with plastic screws is one way to DCC them. If you get insulated #2-56 screws, you can isolate the PT motor brushes from the block, and be able to DCC it that way. If you get some of those Kadee coupler kits with conversion parts, some have the 2-56 plastic screws in them you can use to do that. One guy has converted a PT motor, I intend to do so in a GG1 by Tyco. It's possible, for sure. Some guys are milling the PT block and installing a CD-ROM drive motor. That takes more work, but yields a better-running Tyco engine. Glad you're back in the Engineer's seat again, and ready to roll some HO stuff around the track. Look forward to your future posts ( and some pictures of your trains? ).

Welcome, Mike. It's amazing how easy it is to catch the bug again. For me, it never left.

Welcome aboard. A good collection of folks and unlike other RR sites, people here don't raise their noses to folks that like Tyco or other " lower quality " brands.
