I just bought some Walthers Dummy Couplers and put some on a Tyco hopper where I had removed the original couplers to use on a better car. Do you just use them on cars that are going to be permanently coupled? I think I'll just use them as spares.

I found that using dummy couplers between operating Tyco hoppers improved their tracking. Prior to installing, the cars would bounce around switches, particularly a Walthers/Shinohara double crossover set. Not crossing from one track to another, but just going straight through two switches! I arranged a quartet of cars with dummies between the cars and coupler-mounted Kadees at the ends. The dummy couplers stabilized the cars, making them much more reliable.
