I'd have to do some research to be sure... but I don't think I've ever seen these cars (in real life) as 4- or 2-unit sets. 5-unit is the most common, and I know 3-unit cars of the standard well versions exist but I'm not sure about the Gundersons (this is the version with the high sill ends that surround the bottom container and clamp the top one, correct?)

You could make two 3-unit cars, as you surmised. I didn't realize they sold the B-units as a two-pack. I had always seen them as a 3-pack to go with the A-unit pairs to make a complete 5-unit car.

Come to think of it, I don't know if I've ever seen a Gunderson as a single-unit car, either.

Gundersons are almost obsolete nowadays ever since 53' containers became prevalent.

Well foo, figures Gunderson would make more than one type of container car, doesn't it?

If they are all of the design of your unboxed "spares" unit you pictured, then yes, you can run those as a 1-, 3-, or 5-unit set.

The ones I was thinking of were also offered as a kit by A-Line... so add that to the builder's name, and the somewhat genericized descriptions ("container", "twin stack", etc) and you get the source of my confusion

Tony:

Why would they need to be run in a particular number of units? Like 3 or 5?

Also; era?
