What brand of smoke fluid could I use in Tyco's 0-8-0/2-8-0's smoke units?

The oil that I use for everything around my railroad is Wahl, hairclipper oil. It smokes quite well too.

Thanks! I onced used Lionel fluid and it shorted the unit out! Where can I get the Wahl Clipper Oil? I heard of it, never have found it except for Micromark's catalog.

Hair clipper oil is in the hair section of your local discount or pharmacy store.

Isn't it just mostly mineral oil? Mineral oil is baby oil, too, with fragrance.

I never knew about using the clipper oil. I've heard both yes and no on plain mineral oil. Interested to hear more thoughts.

When we bought our first hair clippers, we got a little bottle of the oil with them. Even though it was apparently compatible with plastic because the hairclipper gaurds are plastic,it seemed like a good idea to do a test on railroad plastics to be sure it was safe. That was years ago and I have have actually used up one 4 ounce bottle and had to get another.

I bought mine at a place called "Sally Beauty Supply". I assume it is a place that supplies wholesale products for beauty shops and the like. About $4 if I remember correctly.

You men know how our minds work and when the need for some oil in a smoker arose one day, I brought out the Wahl oil. It works well. One thing I might mention is that no matter what type of oil you use, be very careful in the amount that you put in. 8-10 drops is too much; it can cause the smoke stack to get too hot and it and the surrounding boiler will melt. (ask me how I know this)

I have also found that the Wahl oil actually improves electrical performance at the wheel/track connection point. I just read an article in MR , I think itwas, about a club that had done testing with automatic transmission fluid and had found that their performance in several areas was markedly improved.

I use the either the Wahl oil or Labelle grease around here for my lubrication needs.

Hi Randy,

Good information, I heard very good comments about Wahl clipper oil, but when I read it was mineral oil I never used it due to the fear of harming the plastic parts.

Since you have used it for long time without problems, seems I will start using the bottle I bought some time ago.

Regards
