My COTW is this Athearn gondola and a pipe loa Years ago, I had a 50-foot gondola and wanted a 40-footer. There was a place where I could cut out the unwanted length without losing any weathering nor losing any paint or detail, so I cut out a section in the middle and had a 40-footer. The one place it would show is on the inside and lots of weathering covered that up. The data block still says it's a 50-footer, so don't look too closely.
In the woods, I found a broken arrow with a hollow shaft and cut it into pipes. The skid around it is built of balsa wood. This will fit in nicely with the oil industry on my layout.

I used to do a similar hack job on the quad hoppers to make them triples. Back in the day I saw alot of those offset side cars. But none of them were quads, they were all triples. Cutting a bay out of them gave me shorter version of what I saw in real life, and gave my freelance railroad a distinctive car to call its own. I'll have to see if I can find one of them and post a pic.

I got some really WIDE straws from the local fast food place & these would make good pipes as they are wider than the ones from McD's!
