I use a pair of old Lifelike track cleaning cars. They originally looked like the red car in this picture except they had a tank to hold track cleaning fluid. It leaked constantly, so it was better to just put the fluid on the felt pad and eliminate the tank.

I put mineral spirits on one car's pad and leave the second car's pad dry to wipe the dirty solvent off.

I suppose it doesn't really matter what the cars look like, because I put them on the track, take two laps around the mainline and put them away, but I didn't like two caboose-looking cars in a row, and am still not fond of the translucent toylike red. I suppose I did this just as a project for its own sake.

I modified one car to just be a flatcar. There was space between the chassis and the deck, so I added some weights there. The original deck was all full of holes, so I added a thin wooden deck on top of it. Some flat black paint killed the toylike look.

I'm not sure what I'll do with the second car, yet.

That’s a good looking flat car!
