Now I can't answer if it had a circuit board or not. I am wondering about the gear tower in that FA-1 0555. Is that a stock part or a after market gear tower. I have a GP-7 with the identical drive gear tower in it.

In 1963 Lionel claimed the diesels had "helic drive" I assumed it meant they dropped the drive bands for geared operation

I have the Pennsylvania alco from 1963 bought from Madison Hardware NY in the early eighties and it IS geared

Also as to the SF pic the ones I have seen have TWO sets of rollers and bands

I saw that before I went out of town - didn't have time to follow up with the seller. What is odd is that the set top box is different than any other set box from that era. It also has “Lionel HO” at the top. I don’t see this in any documentation that I have or via a google search. I’m sure there is an interesting story behind this set, so please let us know if you learn more about this.
