I was talking to Alex last eve and the subject of cool box art came up. I don't have alot of boxes like this but I enjoy Tyco's effort on this one. Maybe you could show other interesting Tyco Mantua boxes?. Even examples of red box or earlier would be great.

Nice art on the Tyco piggyback set. Almost takes you back to 1970...

As I was looking at my box art of the same set Walt posted I noticed something kind of funny. Back in the 70s when these accessories were on the shelves and were supposed to have maximum eye appeal, note the the big black truck on the loading dock(very dull IMO for eye appeal). On Alco Fans Piggy back unloading set it has a bright red truckig speeding down the ramp. Anyways, heres my version of Walts posting. Im glad they never went with black but more flashy colors such as red,yellow,green,..ect

Since the art was already completed, did they think a photo was more modern or maybe cheaper to produce? The art has more eye appeal to me.

Actually, in the picture the black truck looks good. There is so much red and orange that a red truck would have been lost in the background to someone casually glancing a the box, but the black truck stands out. I'm glad too, however, that they didn't actually make a black truck because on a layout, it would have been only barely noticeable on black painted roads and in the shadows of buildings and trees.

Lazy Cell-cam shot (I was digging through too much to bring this over to the light tent, lol):

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I notice on the artwork version of the freight station box, it's not an entirely accurate painting. The roofline and base are slightly different, as is the addition under the roof. That's even before you account for the "squshed/stretched" appearance. That might explain the decision to go with a photo later. If that was required for one or two products, they may have opted to standardize across the line. Shame, because I rather like the art boxes.
One of my favorites is this:
That (and other Tyco set artwork) of the period bears a strong resemblance to the works of Tom Fawell, who painted all the ads for EMD in the 60's and 70's. In fact, for the longest time I thought it was done by him. But I reached out over the weekend and asked him directly.... turns out Tyco only had a flattering imitator on staff (not his words... but he did say he'd have loved to paint those for Tyco).
Very interesting about Tom Fawell. Thanks for the input. Makes me want to learn more about EMD's art dept.
Tony, when you say they had a "flattering imitator", do you mean someone from tyco liked his work so much that they tried "imimitating" his work?
 I always found "The Operating Signal Man was unemployed after his appearance in the 1982 TYCO catalog." real funny
I'm a sucker for Tyco boxes! My earliest childhood memory is of looking at the loco's on the sides of Tyco boxes wishing Dad would buy me a CB&Q GP20. As a result, I'll post this and hope it counts.
