Otherwise a 4-4-4 Electric. I've wanted one of these babies since I first saw an image of it in 1975. Never really forgot about it, but when Frank posted an image of his, it rekindled the flame and I began to seriously try to hunt one down. And here she is. Oops, gotta stick on just a few more hand rails on the front(s). It has an accordion vestibule in the middle. That slays me. I believe this is made for, lettered for Italian State Railways, or something like that. Why here in Henley, UK??
Notice closely the red Soviet star on the nose. In 1964 I took the train with my family out of the USSR to Helsinki, Finland. Back then, it was not a lot different than taking a lovely holiday in North Korea. We were traveling under Canadian passports. Why were visiting this God forsaken place at the height of the Cold War was that dear old Dad was researching the Cossacks for a book he was writing. Never mind that he worked as a translator for the Pentagon while serving in the Army. Had the Ruskies known that, I might be there to this day, drinking brake fluid.
Well, we made it out, or "owt", as we said in Canada, and it was a locomotive very much like this I remember towering over me. In fact, it could have been this model, as the Ruscoms had to import a lot of stuff, because they had murdered so many of their engineers and draftsmen, or they would outright copy some other European manufacturer (as they probably are right now, what with this bonanza left in Aghanistan).
Yeah, it, and the long trip north to Helsinki was burned into my memory. I always had a fascination for anything on rails. Might have pursued it as a younger man, but was told this was a terrible idea. Oh, well, least I get to run this one! And thank you, Frank, for helping me run this dream down!
