Looks good so far! I wanna build #12 and #49 some day. I've got a #34 replica.

That's going to be one massive looking engine. Keep us posted as the project progresses.

Looks like a fun build Erich. On the piece that you added to the boiler, what are the four hatches used for?

It´s the sand dome Barry, you need hatches to fill it.

Looking good, so far.

Thanks Erich. I've only been messin' with smaller locomotives and wasn't use to seeing multiple hatches.

Looks like I can learn something here about where different locomotive components fit on a locomotive. They fit pretty nicely where you've added them Erich. I'm sure the names and functions of those pieces are implicit to experienced folks, but as I demonstrated in my earlier remarks about the sand dome, there's a bunch I don't know. Diggin' the photos.

As do I. I'm wondering if it would be possible to modify it to allow for attaching a tension-lock coupler...
This build is shaping up well, I look forward to seeing it completed and running.

It seems like if you attached a coupler to something as small and light as that pilot truck, the tension on the coupler would often be enough to derail it. Are you sure you wouldn't rather attach the coupler to the pilot beam?

I am, yes. When dealing with tension-lock couplers (also known as hook-and-loop couplers), if a loco has a pilot truck then it works better to mount the coupler to the truck. I suppose that given James' overall length and the fact that it's only a 2-wheel pilot I might be able to get away with body-mounting it, but still.

In that case, with the pilot truck being all soldered brass, it seems like you could just solder on a piece projecting off the end. That could be bent to the desired height and pre-drilled for the screws that mount the coupler.

That is quite a plumbing job Erich. It also looks like you added a couple of boiler straps as well. I'm curious what material you used for them and what you fastened them with. Good to see your continued postings of this project.

Here are a few pictures of the layout of Mr Kenichi Matsumoto. He lives in Japan was an contributor and editor of the Brown Book on Brass. He is also a G&D fan and has several accurate G&D models he has made...

I can't imagine the hours that gentleman put into that layout. Then I finally see a connection to this locomotive build project with his 2-8-8-whatever near the end. Monster machines.

Did this ever get finished?
It urks me with some of these scratchbuilding projects that are on the forum and then have no completion.
