I'll start off SOTW with a Gilbert 30710 set that I found on Craigslist. The engine is in surprisingly good shape considering that it is nearly 60 years old. The hay and tie ejector cars work like a charm. The only negative is a missing transformer, which I hope to pick up at my LHS.

Nice little set! The blue pikemaster transformers can be had reasonably on eBay if you keep your eyes peeled.

I noticed that your set has the harder to find painted NYC Hayjector car. Nice score...

My SOTW is the 1963 Gilbert 30742 "The Eagle" Missouri Pacific passenger set in its original set box along with the extremely hard to find separate sale only Eagle Lake coach in its original box. This is one of the most sought after passenger sets offered by Gilbert.

Anybody want to hazard a guess as to what's in here? Catalog Number: 7319M It was delivered to JC Penny, West Receiving Dock, Forest Park, GA

I will clue you in....it's the original box, but the set was cobbled together. There is a five unit train set, with transformer and track. The track however is Atlas.

The price reflected this.

Hay bale and tie ejector set.

Golden West HO Scale Train Set, my guess.

Lovely MP set, Burb. It looks identical to Tyco. Did AF and Tyco have
some sort of history? Did Tyco buy out AF's HO dies or something??

bad71burb,

Thanks for the info. Wanna trade for your Missouri Pacific set? Great set and it appears to be in excellent condition. I'm envious. Where did you get it?

Chops,
Tyco and Gilbert did a little deal in 1959 where Tyco would supply Gilbert with the HO Frontiersman set and Gilbert would give Tyco the combine, coach and observation car shells to use for the new Tyco plastic cars under the B&O and Canadian Pacific names. The following year or so Tyco introduced it's own cars which are very similar to the Gilbert cars but they are shorter and missing a window in each car. The roofs are also different.

Here are the Gilbert body Tyco B&O cars.

The Tyco made Gilbert Frontiersman set.

Anytime and thank you. It's a very nice set other than a scratch from a loose piece of track in the side of the combine car. I picked it up last year on eBay and the coach I actually ended up scoring two coaches, a Vista dome and observation all in the separate sale boxes. I have a friend who may be selling one of his boxed MP sets of you really want one, it won't be cheap. He may have an unboxed one also.

Well Will V, I used my encylopedic knowledge of Tycomania and the
fact that the Tyco label was upside down AND noticing the crease
on the right aspect of the box, well, it was a dead give away.

Not.

I Googled the catalogue number!

Still, a very interesting set, more so that it is compilation of all sorts.
And thank you Burb, for the 411. I never would have been able to
Google that one up!!

No problem... Actually, you probably could have googled it. I helped out on a section on the Gilbert HO site explaining the differences....

Here's the link. Check it out when you get a chance...

Okay everyone, voting time. A local house-cleanout guy down at the flea market just told me that the latest junk haul to arrive included an old Varney freight set. All I know is that it's still in its box and has an F-unit. I'm not typically one to buy old sets, but I do appreciate Varney products, and I know it's gonna be cheap, so should I just go pick it up this weekend and post it here?
