Hello everyone,
I've been looking and looking for a Coming 'Round the Mountain engine on eBay and I thought maybe I would just post that I am looking for one here in case anyone has one that they would like to sell.
I bought one on eBay last year, but it doesn't run. I would LOVE one that runs good. Would 'runs great' be too much to ask for? My original set that I got for Christmas in 1976 is just sitting on a siding because the engine is burnt out. I trust you guys more than eBayers on the running condition.
With Christmas coming, I would love to get her coming 'round the layout again!
Happy Thanksgiving to all, Mark

Mark,
If your RML engine is in good cosmetic shape, consider replacing the power truck. A lot of Tyco/Mantua engines carry compatible Power Torque motors. The performance will still be mediocre, since the PT is weak, but you could snag a replacement engine and transplant the working power truck.
Of course, you could improve matters further by retrofitting a CD drive motor. There are several examples on the forum with great pictures - backed up with a ton of experience!
If you still want a new engine, someone can fix you up. If you're really in a bind, I could tune-up a spare one of mine for you. I'm reluctant, since the end result is a crap shoot. Wouldn't want to disappoint! -TKRR

I think I have one, condition ? as I've never tried it. I'll try to dig it out tonight and see how it operates, and let you know. What're you thinking of offering for it?
Jerry
EDIT - added 7:19 AM : Ok, I found the one I thought I had. It's got a few nicks here and there. Overall the drivetrain looked good, but it might be missing a brush-spring. I'll take it apart tonight and check it out. The rubber tires look all new, hardly any wear on this unit, other than storage wear-and-tear. Some railings are broken here and there. Missing both couplers ( I can fix that ), and one side piece on the power truck is missing. NOT sure I can find a replacement. Anyway, I'll see if I can get it running tonight, and worry about cosmetics later. I have other Tyco Chassis's I can swap for this one, possibly.
EDIT - added 7:42 AM : Ok, there are NO traction tires on the wheels ( darn morning eyes ). Still, wheels look awfully clean. The spring and brush is missing on one side of the PT, but I can remedy that with one out of a broken PT motor I have. So I think I can get it running tonight, we'll see HOW good after the surgery. Time for work, no more play, so off I go, for another day...

Thanks Gremlin, and Jerry!
Jerry, don't go to any trouble!!! I was just wondering if anyone had a good running one that they wanted to get rid of. I don't want you to get into a project!
I think replacing the power truck is the way to go. I'll look into that. My shell is in very good condition. I've thought about completely replacing the guts with another better-running engine, but I think I would miss the sound and smell of my old Tyco!
Thanks for your help guys.

The Tyco SD24 shells fit onto IHC SD24's. I just converted a Tyco Chessie SD24 using the IHC frame and motor. The frame and motor assembly can be found on ebay for around 20 bucks. I have sellers direct contact info at home and can post if anyone is interested in IHC parts or other manufacturers parts. The only trick on that conversion is getting the weight attached to the frame. I made two mounting posts to secure things. I'll post a few pics if your interested in seeing the conversion. Since the Tyco weight doesn't fit the IHC frame I bought the IHC weight and fuel tank cover from the parts guy. Tom

Too late...I already fixed it. Had both brushes, just had a missing spring. took one out of a beater PT motor, and also used the rubber bands off another to replace the missing donuts. I will try to upload a Vid of it on YouTube, if I can ever get my password straightened out. Anyway, it's running decent, I oiled the squalling bearing, now silent, greased the axles, and it's running pretty nice. Light doesn't work, but typical. Side railings broken in multiple places, 3 or 4, but all there mostly. It's not mint, but it does haul truckuss around my oval ( except at the dirty spot )
Anyway, if you're interested in it, make a reasonable offer.
