HI EVERYONE...I am looking for a SMOKEBOX FRONT for a Rivarossi 4-6-2 Heavy Pacific. Any colour or livery will do. I'm also willing to buy a non-runner 4-6-2 if the smokebox front comes with the locomotive but I really need is the front cover. I'd be grateful if anyone can help me locate one. Thanks ..Edgar

You may be able to find a suitable smokebox cover from CalScale or Precision Scale. If you want an original Rivarossi cover, there is always Ebay. If your locomotive came with the vanderbilt tender your cover P/N is: 445-004. If you have the straight sided tender, cover P/N is: 305-005. Yes, according to my parts book , the steam engine smokebox cover is different between the two types of 4-6-2 locos produced by Rivarossi. The easiest method to determine the difference is with the type of tender.
Unspoken expectations are premeditated failures.

thanks for your help. Actually the locomotive in question is a Rivarossi 4-6-2 B&O Heavy Pacific (President Washington) #1220/1976. I am expecting it to arrive from eBay in the coming days but I know it has a damaged smokebox front cover. The tender looks like an 8-wheel straight sided tender, definitely not a vanderbilt. I am hoping that the front smokebox cover from a 4-6-2 Southern Crescent Ltd model will be a good replacement as I will probably find a spare one in the coming days. Seeing that you are knowledgeable about the subject, do you think I could replace the subframe of the B&O with the one of the Southern Crescent ? Is there a way I could change the piston covers which are obviously a different colour/livery ? A lot of questions I know but I'd appreciate any help you can give me. best regards Edgar

Edgar, yes, the frames are interchangeable. Is the B&O frame damaged? It doesn't look like it from the photo.
If you can't find a direct replacement smokebox front, you could repair the existing one with a Cal-Scale headlight and bell.

hi Nelson ...thanks again for your help. I don't have the B&O loco yet so I can't really be sure if there's any other damage besides the smokebox cover. However the seller did mention something in german (???) that the loco runs erratically and besides the front railing under the smokebox cover is completely missing. That's the reason I asked about a drastic change of the loco underframe with that of the Southern Crescent ... I will check your url's for the parts if things will not go as planned :-) kind regards Edgar

After looking at the photo more closely, I realized the owner modified it. He removed the headlight from the smokebox and mounted one on the pilot, which is incorrect; in fact the B&O President series Pacifics had their headlights mounted at the top of the smokebox front.

That explains why he removed the uncoupling lever, so I wouldn't assume there's any damage, just a modification to undo.
