I bought a Chattanooga engine & tender a week or so ago. It runs great, but I started tinkering with it & now I need an engine. I was trying to see if I could fix the smoke unit & evidently the shell had gotten brittle over the years & when I started putting it back together it started cracking & splitting with chunks falling out.

I might have an 0-8-0 boiler with the smoke unit in it. I will check to see if there any cracks in it. I will get back to you.

I've seen that on quite a few old Chattanoogas, Jerry. My guess is it's the smoke fluid that makes the boilers brittle, either the original Tyco fluid, or things like 3-In-1 that people may have used when the Tyco stuff ran out.

i figure that the smoke fluide or 3-n-1 oil breakes down the plastic as well.
i don't care if the smoke unit works or not. if a big chunk wasn't missing i would have glued it back togethere. thanks AF kid.

This guy is selling a TON of stuff, and has Chattanooga parts for steam engines - might be worth a look at his auctions - I'm checking out his stuff myself.

| I have the boiler---no running boards, no smokebox front, no handrails---from an older Chat with the older handrails. If you can strip the usable parts off of the other and use this, you're welcome to it.

hey shay, i got the boiler on wensday, which was my 39th birthday. thank you again. the shell worked out nice, but when i took the chatt back apart to replace the boiler, the bottum part that the boiler snaps onto has a bad crack in it now. so now i need one of those. figures.
