* The two Gilbert 0-6-0s I got at the Allentown train show last weekend are shapeing up. 31031 the B&O B6 had a burned out motor. I had a original gilbert motor with a good armiture but a broken brush holder. The brush holder from the burned out motor fit taking care of this problum. Next crossion has set in atop the firebox front by the two presure release valves. I started lightly sanding this area but need a finer paper to complete this.
* The front set of drivers had it's tire rim improperly repaired in the past and it wasn't on right. The flange guage is to wide. Had to disasemble the drive section. The motor was off already. The main rod valve gear on each side removes as two units. Removal of one screw and three crakpin, on each side alow the two units to be taken off. Some light brushing with a brass wire brush and oiling makes these look good again. One screw removes the cylinders. A spacer washer is atop the side rods and is removed first. Next the side rods come off. The driver axles are steel and the driver wheel centers are plastic. Slight proding separates axel from wheel. A lot of crazey glue had to be removed from the wheels center outside surface and tire rims inside surface. Once cleaned up the wheel and rim went tightly together. This seams to take care of the loose rim problum. Aligning and pressing together the wheel and axel, replaceing main rods, valve gear, motor and cylinders puts the drive section back together. Flange guage was checked on the three axels and was OK. I rewired the boiler section only to find out that the new wires insulation was to thick and at at smoke unit front blocked the boiler to frame replacement. Now I have to find a new type of wire.
* Now the tender! All electrical pickup for this model is done on the tender. This is just like on the Gilbert J3 Hudson. One truck picks the left rail and the other the right. The wireing solders directly to the screw and nut inside the tender body. The tender trucks can not be removed without unsoldering this connection. Four screws hold the tender body to it's frame. Now checking for power to the motor shows a problum here. No power is geting to the motor. This is where I'm at now. I have to remove the tender trucks and clean up all connections from the wheels to the wireing to the motor.
I have gotten new boiler fronts for both locos. I still need new front pilots or I'll have to make them. It isn't hard to do . It just takes time and Material. I want to get the original parts. Their is a site for American Flyier parts but I have to locate it again. I could use some help here.

Hi Frank,

Try this site. http://www.rfgco.com/catalog/index.html?gilbertho.html

I have a 31004 0-6-0 that I picked up on eBay for only about $22 because the seller didn't know what it was. It only needed a pickup wire reattached and a cleaning and tuneup. Now it runs great, and smokes like a house on fire. The 4 wheel tender pickup is the weak point though. I think wipers on the front drivers would be the best option, since the tender truck journals are crimped shut, trapping the axles, and zamac doesn't flex.

I have a 443 Hudson as well. The heavier tender and longer wheelbase is better for electrical pickup.

Hi Nelson : The two I picked up were really part locos. I'm just determined to repair them and get them working again. The B&O is a oddball. It is the second that I have aquired. Two different numbers. The other is the same that you have 31004. I'de like to get a Erie 0-6-0. It is the only one without a smoke unit. That site doesn't have 0-6-0 pilots. I may have to make them.

Mine is a Pennsy, of course. I've never seen it in B&O.

There's another guy on eBay who has a few AF HO parts. Wouldn't hurt to shoot him a request.

If that doesn't pan out, do you plan to get some mold rubber and cast a new one out of urethane?

The tender looks like a Mantua.
I have one that looks just like the one in the photo.

Nelson : I won't be makeing any molds. I never tried it before. I know I can make one from plastic. The original is not exactly full of detail and should not be to hard to copy. Also A Mantua slope back tender is different than the Gilbert. The Gilbert being larger and all die cast.
*** I finished my repairs on 31031 drive. It is a running loco now. I still have to get wire for the smoke unit. The original wire was a 18 or 20 gague stranded wire. The strands were not twisted together as is the norm. They are losely placed into a cloth woven insulation. The wire is not just flexable but can be compressed flat. That is why the two original wires fit and the new plastic insulated ones don't. The old wire went right in the garbich and was thrown out. It's gone!

* Back to 31031 the B&O. I am really looking hard at this. I removed the wheel and axel and cleaned them again. Ah the light comes on. The wippers are missing. Bronzed brass wippers take power from the metal axel and bring it to the center post, the screw holding the truck on. I wondered why their was a wide slot atop the screw and not a screw driver slot. Checking another Gilbert 0-6-0, their they are, wippers! Ok pulled out my metal box found a small thin sheet of bronzed brass. It cuts with a good pair of sissors. I made two wipers and installed them. I put power to the motor and I have a running drive.
* The model has a front pilot that needs replacement but it is mostly their. I'll use it till I get another.
* Remaining problems on this loco are sanding and touching up the firebox top. Rewireing the smoke unit. Getting a new pilot. Maybe I can find another tyco pilot and use it till a replacement is found.
* Putting it all together I have a running locomotive that doesn't smoke with a damaged front pilot.
* I will get back to you latter.

Your 31004 is older than mine, Frank. Yours has cloth wiring, the older motor, and sprung tender trucks. I think the wipers were more necessary on yours so that the current bypassed the truck springs.

Interesting how they changed. My 0-6-0 has the newer motor, which looks more like a typical Pittman. It's very strong and quiet, but boy does it stick out of the cab. I may swap the motors between the Hudson and the 0-6-0 for that reason.

Nelson : Remember these trains were designed back in the 1940's. Before world war 2. Their was a great deal of just being practical put into them. With their detail and mechanical design they accomplished alot. It is 2008 and ours, tho heavily played with still do what they were designed to do.

Three times is a charm, eh? Did the forum software go berserk?

I'm not criticizing them, Frank. They will run forever with very little maintenance. I was just saying that I can hide the larger Pittman motor inside the Hudson, and use the shorter older motor in the 0-6-0. They had to stretch out the Belpaire firebox to cover up most of that motor as it was.

Nelson : Ok change the subject. I will replace the brush holder and rewire 31004 tomorrow. Temporary use a tyco pilot for now. That should put this loco back in service minus some touchups. If it goes quickly 31031 will get rewired to.

Ok, at the Dover train show I picked up a parts Gilbert 0-6-0. #433, body and finish is good. Valve gear and rods are their. The frame has the correct older white wheels. Drivers need a lube job. After oiling they have freed up nicely. It has a original motor with brush holder and 1 brush. I hope it works! A smoke unit that works with no piston. The gear is their and the crank arm but on piston. No tender. No boiler front. No front pilot, and no smoke stack brass threaded tube.
Now when I get the 31004 running, it will wait for a tender. If the motor is good, i'll use the new frame with the white wheels and the 433 body and the 04 tender and make a 433. I'll use the piston from the 04. If I can't find another Gilbert Pennsylvania tender, and front pilot at the Greenbergh show this weekend a few dealers have Bachmann trains and parts. If they are their i'll buy a couple of the slope back switcher tenders. They are the perfect size and shape, with much more detail. I'll use the a Bachmann to get the 04 running. Also I will use the TYCO 2-8-0 front pilot which fits and looks very well.
Well I have a plain again. Now to make it work.
