After some years of poking about, finally got this Canadiana from Dan Mack. Retrofitted with an MU2 and handrails that I cannibalized.

I like your Climax, Justin. Good to see logging loco with normal-ish drive wheels and side rods.

** My loco of the week is a 1947 Varney cast F3A. It is painted for the Reading. It has the variable 3 speed motor drive. slow, normal, and fast. I cleaned it up a little and oiled it. Then tested the drive in its middle speed. It runs smooth on the test track. * I'll post some photos and find my link to a video of the test.

** These locos have been around for a long time. They worked on the principle that more weight meant better traction. They are designed for either single or double truck power. It needs a stripping and a repainting to look its best. Maybe someday. frank

Not sure what you mean by variable 3 speed motor, I thought all motors are variable? I see that old school coupler on the back.

Okay, do you see the different sizes of drum on the motor shaft and drive shaft? Most motors are confined to one speed/traction range, determined by their gearing or the size of their belt drums. That motor offers three different ranges.

Looks good, glad it has handrails! They should all have em. You fellas are gonna have to start warming up to PT's, I've got 13 of them in service with no problems, the more you run them, the better they run.

Here is my Loco of the week..... A Walther's Trainline F40PH in MTA_Metro North colors. This has been a very hard engine to find. Now there is another shell and a complete one recently sold on Ebay......

Well, maybe I push my stuff a little hard, but over the years I've had more headaches with split pinion gears and several burn outs with grey smoke gushing out of the windows.

Remarkable piece. Personally, stripping and repainting would, to me, be like stripping and refurbishing an antique coin or antique musket. But, that's just me.

The variable drive is very interesting, toptrain. I would suggest leaving them with the old patina. Several years ago I was given a huge lot of stuff that included 2 F unit frames with 8 wheel drive and centrifugal clutches. Haven't seen anything like that since.

I am glad that this Varney F3 with its drive has proven to be interesting. With a spring drive belt the belt doesn't wear out and break. Also it is easy to change speeds. Where it is in the middle on equal size pulleys, shaft input and output speed remains the same. larger input pulley to smaller output pulley makes output shaft turn faster. The reverse is slower. frank

Personally, I think it's better to restore it to a fine condition then let it lag around in bad shape, but once again that's just my opinion.
sim-al2 Also since they cut track maintaince the trains had huge trouble making over the railroad by the end 純那 yeah They did a Rock Island volountarily

I'm in the same camp when it comes to things like model locos. To me, leaving them trashed feels as bad as seeing the real ones trashed
