The only clue to the origins is each piece says "Made in Western Germany" somewhere on the shell. The passenger cars have "Western Germany" stamped on the truck frames.

I have never seen anything like it before. But I am not as smart about trains as some of the other members here.

It was donated to the club I belong too, Cumberland Valley Model Railroad Club. We do sell some stuff, but since this thing is so unique, we may keep it as part of our "museum". We get all kinds of stuff donated, and if we can't use it on one of our layouts, or keep it for display, we sell it at train shows or during our open houses.

From what I've seen Microbusss, you want one of everything. Of course, so do I.

I asked my pal David at the Railhead to look at this post.
He suggested two possible makers.

1) Distler
2) Bub
I have no clue myself. Tinplate is way out of my league.

Thanks PGE33, that is more than I had to go on. I will research those brands.

***Distler it is! Thanks again.

It is, in fact, a Distler. Take a look at this.

Huh, never heard of Distler or Bub trains. Some new ones to learn about, for sure. Considering it was a German toy maker, that very much looks like the American streamline train of the time. Interesting stuff!

I've seen pictures of the prototype a couple of times before. Very nice looking loco, and it looks like they used those bad boys for quite some time in Europe.

Thanks everyone for the input. The prototype is an interesting looking machine. It looks like we might be keeping this set for a museum display, as it seems fairly unique, but not extremely valuable.

Props to PGE33 for manufacturer suggestions and kovacste000 for finding photographic proof of identity.

Must have been an early post WWII piece, as it refers to West Germany. Must have been a real delight to some
young person(s).
