The Covered Bridge Central resumed operations today after a long hiatus due to a harsh winter and limited time for repairs. There has been some great weather this past week and the CBC garden railroad kicked off the season with a special excursion.

The Covered Bridge Cannonball rounds Switchstand Curve. It is a mystery how this stretch got it's name.

Very cool Steven. Straighten me out here; is this HO or G scale? Is this the 4-6-0 that was pictured elsewhere? How big of an outdoor set-up is this? Looks like you spent some time getting the tracks looking ballasted and things.

This is my outdoor layout in G-Scale that I work on when the weather is nice. I posted the 4-6-0 in the LOTW section. The layout is on two levels with basic irregular loops of track that covers an area about 20 x 20. The second level is currently out of commission while I replace a damaged bridge.

Is the roadbed a permanent garden fixture and you take the track up in the winter? Looks like great fun; kick back in a lawn chair and just watch that 4-6-0 go round and round and round and round . . . .

I know this question has already been answered but it is definitely G scale. I can tell just by looking at the locomotive.

Covered Bridge Central # 8 has proven to be a very reliable performer and has become the workhorse of the fleet hauling passenger and freight traffic. It came to the CBC second hand and was purchased literally at garage sale pricing. It is a third generation Big Hauler that runs from track power. The smokestack was missing and has been replaced with a diamond stack from a New Bright engine that was in the scrap box.

Mogul #3 is a product of Scientific Toys. For those of you looking for a well made G scale train on a budget, these have really well made drives with gears on the first and third axles as opposed to the single gear on most trains. This engine will run all day on a single set of batteries and it even comes with a pretty neat sound system and a wireless remote,Here #3 is handling the Covered Bridge Central Comet, the lines premier passenger train.

They look similar but Scientific Toys are far better engineered I think. In fact, the G scale Disney sets that you can buy at the park are made by Scientific Toys. I don't think that the earlier New Brights would pass muster for Disney but some of the more recent ones might.

I do, this set was sold at Sam's Club and had a few extras that many of the regular Bachman sets did not including a coach, a combine and the East Broad Top style caboose lettered for the North Star Express.

Brand new power for the Covered bridge Central In anticipation of new high speed freight service the CBC has purchased this 2-6-0 from the CNWThe 3750 is seen on a shakedown run prior to being repaintedThe engine currently strongly resembles the color scheme of Southern railway steam engines The model is a slightly modified later model track powered New Bright. It originally picked up powered from a poorly designed set of track sliders in the tender that would catch and hang up on any irregularities in the track. I removed the metal wheels from the pilot and pony truck and used them to replace the plastic wheels in the tender. I then modified the original track sliders to act as pickups on the backs of the new tender wheels. It was originally a Prairie type but I removed the rear trucks and I think it makes a better looking Mogul which was a far more common wheel arrangement. Now it runs like a champ and has just proven itself by running for several uneventful hours. The engine itself runs smooth and quiet and has a pretty cool built in sound system. The Chief Mechanical Inspector for the CBC seems to be pleased with the results.

I have found a brand of plastic compatible spray cans in the craft section of Michael's that does a great job. They have a semi-gloss black that lays down super smooth and looks top notch when done.

Believe it or not I bought this 4 6 0 and two coaches along with a scientific toys 2 6 0 mogul in a tote at a train show for $50.00. The Bachman is one of the most recent versions and runs like a champ compared to other earlier versions. The story goes that it was purchased by an attorney for a display in a storefront window of his law office for the holidays. It was never even run and just sat and then he lost interest in it after the holiday. The dealer I got it from even threw in the tote for free!

I have the same engine with a BBT drive 99% installed. All that's left to do is cast some weights for traction when the weather is nice enough to do it.

So here is the latest addition to the Covered bridge central roster. Bachman Gig Hauler 4-6-0 # 49. I got it to use as a donor to replace the drive on one of my battery op Big haulers but on closer inspection it is in better condition than the one that was going to gets its drive. The plan now is to cast some metal wheels for my battery opps and replace the motors with better quality ones as well as metal tender wheels for pick up and also upgraded sound systems, smoke generators and possibly paint.

Nice garden railway. Mine is burried under winters wrath still. We do have an elevated line in our living room to run the G scale trains on. Here is a couple pics of our outdoor line during last summer. Slowly making progress on it as well as switching from a Euro theme to the old west. Motive power is an old beater LGB 2018D mogul, needs new steam and sand domes as they are missing and I am hoping to squeeze out the funds to get a Kalamazoo 4-4-0 and 2 passenger cars this year. Right now the outdoor track is all heaved from the rollercoaster winter we are having. Cant wait for the big thaw so I can tamp the track back down. Need to repair my covered bridge soon, I pulled it prior to winter for rehab. Mike

Thanks, I picked that up at the local shop that handles nothing but large scale, was in an estate. Gave it a bath of Thompson's water sealer before it went outdoors, Been outside 4 years till this fall when I removed it so I can refresh the paint. I need to find a depot that is more old west looking, that Euro style one is still there right now. Mike

old Number 7 has been partially rebuilt. The venerable ten wheeler is now TRACK POWERED and has a new can motor and metal wheels. It has been fitted with a Seuthe smoke unit that created great amounts of smoke. A brighter headlight bulb was installed and a portable bluetooth sound speaker replaced the original Bachman sound board. The engine is now a solid reliable and much smoother and quieter performer. Today was a shakedown test and the 4-6-0 hauled a train around the freshly ballasted CBC mainline for hours without a hitch! Its great to have #7 back in action and better than ever.
