The daily going on's here at the Frankford roundhouse keep me very busy. The Pennsylvania Railroad desire for technical information, drives them in evaluating all current locomotives. Their information that is acquired, is there and open to all. This recent partnership between the Pennsylvania Railroad here in the USA, and the Great Western Railways of Great Britain shows the sharing of Technologies can only result in a better way of doing things. May it lead to great progress in the developing of better ways to moves us around.

Toptrain joined me today up here with the pigeons atop the coaling tower. It is a great place for photos. Right now a CNJ freight train is leaving the yard. A pair of F3 locomotives lead the smaller train. It is all flat cars with loads. Some pleasure boats and some airplanes. I hope it is informative.

* Two days ago the Camelback Pacific LV 2004 arrived. Here at Frankford, secrets fill the air. Removed from retirement and rebuilt. The Sayer Round house secretly did this work. What will be next? What will we see? The PGW with its Lehigh Valley ties has done something extraordinary. Four old all wood X-Pullmans have been restored and brought back to life. They have spent enough time in the museum.

Afternoon addition.
Snoopy Reporting.

A list of some fast times recorded in 1900 by the Black Diamond Express. These occured eariler in the 1890s
* Take note of train #9, July 21 1900. Alpine to Kendaia. 34 miles in 25 minutes. Average speed 89 MPH. The Black Diamond had to be doing more than 100mph for most of this run. Had to top 120 mph for 2 and 3 mile stretches. These times included station stops.

Also a referance in a article about" No More Doubleheading ". This refers to the Black Diamond Express and its new Pacific type locomotives. It says there are 6 of them.

A copy :
*
In the Railway Age Gazette of October 13, 1913, page 704, a record run of a new Pacific type locomotive hauling the Black Diamond Express on the Lehigh Valley was described. Six of these locomotives are now running in passenger service on the division between Easton, Pa., and Sayre, a distance of 194 miles. The maximum grade on this division is between Mauch Chunk and Wilkes-Barre, over the Wilkes-Barre mountain. The grade between Mauch Chunk and Glen Summit (the top of the mountain) is 33.7 miles long, and has a maximum rise of 67 ft. to the mile, westbound. The grade between Wilkes-Barre and Glen Summit is 19.6 miles long with a maximum of 95.7 ft. to the mile eastbound. The locomotives were designed to haul, unassisted, passenger trains weighing 550 tons westbound, and 360-ton trains eastbound, over this division. Heretofore it has been necessary to double head trains of these weights, using a Pacific type locomotive having a total weight of 241,300 lbs. and a tractive effort of 31,600 lbs. and a ten-wheel helping locomotive having a total weight of 199,500 lbs. and a tractive effort of 31,400 lbs. . . . —Railway Age Gazette, March 6, 1914, p. 473.

Someone asked about the locomotive/tender on the flatcar... I'm taking a stick at it and guess it is the "Der Adler" 2-2-2...

-Gareth & Eric/ Da Cheeze
The 86' Pullman cars are found in Gold-covered boxes... they are Pullman-Palace cars. Actual "goldleaf" rub-on window detail...
They can be quite light unless a bit of weight is added. It may be rare to find them as kits because Roundhouse is now producing them as R-T-R models which means a higher price tag.
Roundhouse is also producing the Harriman cars... and depending on road names, some of them have six-axles/three axle trucks.

John

I don't have a one track mind. It depends on the turn-out.
"I love your catenary!"
Is that a power-trip or just another pick-up line?

* Upon viewing the previous, "Letter to the Editor" Which wasn't properly addressed I wish to state this.
* * Good info John. Those Palace cars are indispensable when you are making a civil war, to 1910 name passenger train. There are only four, but where viewed, by turning some around, the four become seven. You see each side is different. If you enclose the open vestibule, of the observation you have a great Pullman chair car. So now the four become eight different cars when viewed.
* About the Harriman cars. They do look nice and are the only ones made. Just when you visually compare them to the real ones, they look short. Now I have a set of PRR Harriman's and have no problem showing them, or running them. Like I said " They Look Nice".

The Pennsylvania Great Western has never stopped surprising me. Today at coffee across from the Bergen point a unannounced special pulled in. A streamlined train set head ended by a British A4 pacific. I guess it is here to pick up New year celebrators and take them back home to the Midwest. The Red white and gray of the Burlington Route can bring sunshine to a cloudy day.

Also whenever you do roundhouse shots with a loco on the turntable I always think the locos in the roundouse facing out are saying "Who's this new guy?"

Morning addition.
Snooping reporting
* Today a undecorated engine was seen out in the open, without a bit of paint on it. It was seen spinning around on the turntable. Yep it was down to its bare metal. Such a thing. It looks pretty good.

Kenny ; With the rubber band drives you get that that sudden stop with the spring forward and back. You have to be easy on the throttle to control that. The snap back causes to many derailments. Nothing like a flywheel drive to eliminate the snap.

Chief Engineer Catfordken, The riding public is highly enthused with the level of quality of this train set. It brings back the feel of the original Pullman cars.* As to riding quality the die cast truck frames, metal axels, add to the smooth ride. No derailments !

Ken Nelson. That is a Bachmann painted loco. They aren't decals.
It is one I wount be kitbashing. I still have 3 other bodies for kitbashing. Two have that Great Northern paint. Very colorfull green. Maybe i'll try to put 2 together and make a T-1 4-8-4 like the Reading did.

toptrain reporting.

*** A 3 star report.
Today completed at the Frankford Roundhouse is the re-boilering of ANNA mastodon, 4-8-0, #364. She sit here in all her gory, with her new boiler, stack, bell and modern high pressure relief valves. There are 2 because if one should fail the other will drop the over pressure and contain what could be a explosive situation.
Pride in accomplishment is shown here on the faces of all present. This heavy duty freight locomotive is now returned to service on the ANNA Railroad.

* Today on a siding near the Frankford yards, I recorded this sean. The engineer told me that this bobber caboose just came out of the Roundhouse. It's unsightly copula has been removed and the flat roof returned. These small cabooses copulas usually block the view to the engineer when backing up in yard work . A return to past practices for the sake of safety.

opps ! ! ! The 0-4-0t #80's stack lines up exactly with the stack of the 4-6-0 behind it.
It looks like one big long smoke stack.
