Not that rare nor valuable. Maybe for some though.

During the lean years for Tyco.

Well, not limited to the US, this set should be called the
"The Spirit of Bankruptcy." This Hornby set is roughly the
equivalent of Tyco. From Australia.

Here is a Gilbert HO single dome Mobilgas tanker for $300. I queried the seller, who in my opinion doesn't know what they are selling and how to price it. His/her other auctions are very $$$ too.

That is a lulu. I couldn't help myself, so sent a message asking where he came up with
that price and if expects there to be a buyer. If I get an answer, I'll post it.

And he answered! The guy is an optimist.

Sold my last one for $50 with no box and not nearly as nice. Sohio is nearly impossible to find. It’s probably closer to $100, hence the best offer price. A lot more rare than Bubble Yum, Maxwell House, and even Brach’s Tyco cars. Perhaps less desirable though. This tanker only appeals to a very small group of collectors.
Let’s see what happens,
Brian

He had make offer. I highly dought that anyone paid $124. for that Sohio....Plus his page didn't show the SOLD sign for $124, it just showed that the auction was no longer avalable. I think the guy is full of it...

About a week ago, there was a Sohio tanker going for $75. It sold. Now $124, and sold, although we don't know if the seller got his asking price. Wonder what next week will bring, a Sohio for $175?

Walt,
You should have given all the cars, except the Sohio, to your nephew and then sold the Sohio for a tidy profit. The gain probably would have paid for the x-mas gift.

Well, Chops... He has had the bug for quite a few years now! He's 37. Loves his HO trains. I always give him one of the rarer Tyco pieces every Christmas. Recently he got my unboxed Tyco Sohio and a few others more common, nice, boxed pieces. These 5 minus the boxed Sohio that I bought the lot for.

Check out this $245 auction for a Gilbert HO MobilGas tanker. The box is labeled 33517, but the car only has the 3 digit 517. When I asked him why the price was so high (it was $300), he said another MobilGas tanker went for that price, thus his price. His other auctions are also $$$

Here is the link: https://www.ebay.com/itm/165259718070?hash=item267a3f2db6:g:OvUAAOSwSiNhzg9C

Does anyone see anything rare about this car? Thx.

Hold the presses: I found what appears to be the exact same tanker in my large pile of tankers. I believe it
was given to me free by Tin Plate Henry. I like it, definitely has a certain look about it, but I am going to post it next to his and ask $100 for it...What the Heck. Maybe it's just a knock off, but I don't know its provenance.
Stamped with an "OK" and Hong Kong on the bottom. Really don't know what it is, but
what the Heck, if somebody with deep pockets wants it, they can have it!!!

Well, it is numbered 4442, or something, not 517, also a three dome, but I want to see if someone is dumb enough.

I saw that weathering job too, and something unmentionable in a family forum came to mind. That said, the tanker is far more valuable to me with kadees than with a Gilbert box.

When did a 20-pair pack of Kadee #5s (aka #11) become A$60? Three or four years ago I was paying $32 (plus shipping) on eBay Australia. The AUD is roughly 75 US cents, so A$60 = $45 (A$32 = $24).

Now, they're either ridiculously expensive at model stores (e.g. $10 to $15 just for a regular 2-pair #5 packet, if not more) or nonexistent/out of stock, and no-one on eBay Australia has any bulk packs at all (not even 10-pair packs aka #10). Naturally, I also need draft gear boxes as well, as Kadee doesn't supply them in bulk packs for whatever reason. Even those (#232) are around $10 each despite being lumps of plastic which any old 3D printer could make (I don't have one of those unfortunately).

To top it off, USPS is still blacklisting Australia so I can't buy from the US unless I want to pay nearly $100 for the same product. To get couplers I would have to get things sent via the Global Shipping Program aka Pitney Bowes ($$$$$$$$) or an equivalent courier which hasn't blocked Australia and then pay about $50 shipping on top of the item price.
https://about.usps.com/newsroom/service-alerts/international/welcome.htm

And no, it isn't any cheaper locally - try $55 in-store as of April 2022.

This one (not eBay) takes the cake though. $92.99. Seriously? Didn't know Kadee also made couplers out of gold.

This is a very rare Tyco Durango Cupola 40’ Caboose. Factory part number is 327-30.
It is a late production piece from the early 1990’s and was only manufactured right before Tyco stopped selling HO trains.
Original box and insert are included. All steps, wheels, couplers, brake wheels, and smoke stack are present.
Nice original factory gloss. Wheels show minimal use. See pics to appreciate.
On the top of the cupola, there is a styrofoam rub mark. Thanks for viewing.

Absolutely beautiful chrome set with red stripes including set box and individual boxes with inserts with windows.
The train looks super with glossy full chrome on all pieces.
The only problems in the chrome is on the observation which shows some black plastic showing through in spots along center ridges.
The tavern car also shows some black along one center roof ridge.
One coach shows a little black while the other coach has nearly perfectly roof.
I am not an expert on these chrome cas but I suspect that many or nearly all of these chrome roofs show this from the factory.
The cars are all lighted and lights work well except in one car which has one light out probably needs new bulb.
The engine runs and lights but likely motor needs cleaning and lube since set has been unused for many years.
The individual boxes are nice with all flaps, inserts and windows.
