Hey Guys:

Not long ago I got to know a fella named Chris walker a retired streetcar driver (Toronto Transit Commision) I was sorta introduced to him online by our Ray of this forum.

Anyway he invited me to join the Interurban/Traction railroad club called "Traction in Action". We go to train shows and Senior Citizen residences to display the layout you see in the pictures below. It portrays south central Ontario, Canada in or about the late 40's, hence you'll see Union Jacks over several buildings.

It takes about 45 minutes to set up and take down and btw, the entire thing runs off the overhead wire! the two tracks are "ground"

Enjoy!

Best,
Gareth

Nice pics!

I like the little "fender-bender"...hope nobody got hurt.

That Eaton's truck is a nice touch as well.

Awesome pictures Gareth. That must be a cool layout to see running. I've only ever seen one layout with trains running off overhead, and it was a fairly small one. You've got some sweet looking busses on that layout as well.

Do the wires make it harder to set up? I know the track on the different sections would just slide together using rail joiners or a short piece of track...how do you connect the wires?

G -- Cool layout. I'm sure the senoir citizens can recall vivid memories from scenes on the layout.

Hey Cheezy, and anon....

The wire loops through a kind of overhead frog then is tensioned. I'll ask Chris my buddy who is responsible for the overhead at shows to write an explanation addendum...

the little kids we tell them the wire is active and if they touch it, it'll feel like getting a needle jabbed in their finger!!! Gawd I'm mean man!!!

Brian, dead on about the Seniors. We have to qualiffy that though. Most of the "TIA" guys like a lot of model RR-ers are Seniors. Certainly many of the Traction in Action guys are. I'm the youngest by far and I was born when Gawd was in short pants! The people we visit are mostly in some kind of assisted living and they love the memories and to tell us their stories.

MM... not sure that Eaton's paint job is early enough? I can't remember when they started using that.

Those trucks when you can find them in Toronto are now over $40! Which is nuts!

No one hurt in the accident. However since I'm typing this some other Towman is getting the tow business instead of yours truly!

Btw; speaking of "yours truly" thats me in the white "Glasgow Rangers" hat and wait for it, big shock, I'm telling a story!

Cheez, if you get down this way this year, we'll see about having you over to Chris' and and you can run some traction on the overhead at his place*. maybe bring a favourite loco or two so you can really stretch it's legs! Theres a 2-rail mainline that parallels the Traction overhead one...

*= I know it's annoying, but you'll have to OK the side trip with your "Parental Units"!

Hey G. I don't get down to Toronto very often...I was in Missauga a couple weeks ago, but it was only for the weekend, so not much time to do anything. Only another week and a half 'till I can get my G1 though...I'll come visit you eventually

On your friend's layout, does the 2 rail line have catenary on it? I've got 4 engines that have non-working pantagraphs, and I've always wanted to see them with a wire overhead, even if it's not doing anything

Hey Cheezy:

Um, I though I heard Chris say he can switch it so a 2R engine can run under the wire... Have to ask him....
