Speaking for myself...this is what I like about collecting the cheaper HO items.
Pictured below is a couple Tyco Fs that were purchased from the bottoms of tables at local trains shows one for 5.00 and the other was 4.00.
The traction tires are long gone but one pulls while the other pushes and
is capable of pulling a 8 to 10 car train.
A silly lashup I know but my kid is having a ball running them for hours.
and for 9 bucks How can you beat it ?

You can't beat it, I think a lot of the hobby's charm has been lost over the years. It's interesting to note that the hobby has its roots in the Depression, built up by folks with a lot of time and creativity on their hands.
