A Hornby ready made Toll House. These structures populated the inland canals of Britain for hundreds of years collecting tolls from passing freight barges. Before there were railroads, there were canals, and Britain, was, and still is, crisscrossed by them. Naturally, when railways began to assert, the canal owners had a collective fit and worked exceedingly hard to prevent the proliferation.
Placing this structure is a little troublesome, as the spot it used to occupy has a double main running through it. Perched to the left the canal scene isn't terrible, but it may be necessary to move or extend the canal scene to bring it closer to the building.

In my home state of Illinois, there was a canal joining Lake Michigan with the Illinois River. The Rock Island Railroad wanted to build alongside the canal and the canal fought hard to prevent it. A deal was struck where the railroad could build along the canal but would have to pay tolls to the canal. There was a deadline for approval, and the canal lost so much time trying to prevent the railroad altogether that they didn't approve the deal on time, so the railroad got to run along the canal and not pay tolls.

That's quite interesting. Another advantage to rail is that it didn't freeze over.

Very true. I've skated on the canal, but not the tracks.
