Hello Happy Members !
I want to paint a very simple backdrop (just a blue sky / no cloud) on chipboard pieces. Do I need a coat of white paint before adding the blue coat ? I'll use Liquitex acrylic paints. What would be the correct height for H0 scale? 8", 10" or more ? Thanks a lot for your help.

In my opinion you'd be much better off using Masonite for your backdrop. This chipboard doesn't look like a smooth surface.

My backdrop is a 24" sheet cit to fit, but actual height varies with the height of the terrain in front of it.

I painted it with 3=4 coats of "oops" paint. You can often get paint that somebody had custom mixed but didn't like for dirt cheap at Lowes.

Thanks for your reply jward. The chipboard i usually buy is very smooth but the Masonite is a very good idea too. I'll see what's the best solution.

I used some scrap chip board a while back and it was fine. It was not necessary to give it an undercoat. Adding the clouds was surprisingly easy: just a relaxed wrist and short bursts of white spray paint is all that is needed. Of course, you know, you will need to predrill the chipboard for screws. That, I simply drove half a dozen screws onto the edge of the baseboard. For strength, 4 foot sections were added to each end, and likewise affixed with a couple of screws. Very sturdy.

You might want to get the measurement of a common Walther's backdrop, so if in the future you want to paste on a backdrop you can without having to resize everything. Probably about 8 ft x 2 feet, or even 18 inches, I don't recall.

We should ask RP what he used- looks to be cardboard, and is quite effective.

I used lauan wood, cut to the right lengths, and 13.5 inches high. I then painted it with a sky blue color paint.
