I swore up and I swore down, no more locomotives. Got more than I can run even after blowing out half the herd. But...and there is always a but with guys like us, I've always wanted a Shay, but could never find one at a price I would spend. Then this one came up as a private sale on the Model Train Forum, and I pounced. It's a Spectrum, and new in box, for 150 clams. I have yet to light the fires; I am almost afraid to, hope she runs as nice as she looks. Primarily, she will see duty on Mormon's Gulch. When I get tired of running Old West, I will swap out and run Old Front Range. Yeah, she will need some log buggies. One thing leads to another. Maybe a Goose for the secondary track...

I got lucky on this one, it sort of fell into my lap. Thinking of replacing Ely-Thomas Logging Co. with a Penn Central logo...

Experimenting with flex track I discovered that a Bachmann HO Shay can negotiate a curve radius of slightly smaller that 15"; maybe 14" before the tender interferes with the rear of the coal bin.

Good to know!
With some trepidation I gently placed her on New Armadilloville for a test run, not knowing if the extraordinarily detailed and complex gears, universals, and rods would hopelessly bind or is I would be greeted to the whine of a split cog. To my delight, she glided away as quietly as a ghost, and at a superbly scale speed, rods and shafts reciprocating madly. Video soon.

Nice loco, Chops. I can see it going to and fro the mining camps.
Here is my loco of the week, a Gilbert Wabash.

Classico! I imagine this was still mainline power when it was produced as this model, perhaps? 1950's?
Er, logging camps?

That loco was produced in 1961/62.
Hmmm. Your engine could have taken the wood from the logging camps to the mining camps?!

Inspired by your post I put my Shay to work. It failed to climb my 2% grade... Oh NO! After getting a whole new truck under warranty many years ago, and then buying replacement side frames with drive gears (from Bachmann now out of stock) the infamous plastic gears have failed again. I just placed a Walthers order for NWSL metal gears. There is a good video for installing them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mspLRpXIlYI

I have one of these from the mid 1950's (I think I posted it here before). Beautiful locos, in my opinion. Mine still runs great, too!

Yep, yours was the 443 engine, which was another great (IMHO) steam loco built by Gilbert. It really is amazing how well they run after 60+ years!

Had the Shay running tonight; flawless. Reading about ordering metal gears from NWSL is making me queasy. Is this to good to be true? MRSP is $500, I got mine, NIB for $150. Should I sell out before turns into a doorstop?
I suppose she could run from the logging camp to the mining camp, but only after she hauls the Zephyr to Chicago.

I know! The only problem I had with mine was the metal tire came off of the rim when I first received it. I put some krazy glue on there, and put it back on the rims with a click, and it's been fine ever since. It barely even requires much warmup unlike a lot of other engines I have of similar age. They really built these old girls to last.
