We all know the familiar Tyco icon Planter's car, JMO, one of the best bill boards ever done, but
when this AHM (? Made in Slovenia) piece popped up, I had to snatch it for 15 bills, even though
I have sworn off collecting.

I know that this is a Planters painted car, but did all you Penn Central nuts know this is a model of a PC prototype? The corner gussets near the plug door give it away. If I recall correctly, these were originally in the LifeLike line. Slovenia would be where Mehano's factory is located. This is definitely NOT AHM. Slovenia didn't exist when AHM went out of business, cars imported by them should be marked Yugoslavia.

Well, this is very interesting. Thanks for the info. A brief Google search
shows that they claim to have the oldest known wheel (5000 y.o.) as well
as oldest known musical instrument (55,000 y.o.).

Here are Life-Like's made from PC prototype car but it does not have all the door locking apparatus

Note the open stirrups. This car lives on in Walther's Mainline line

https://www.walthers.com/50-evans-ss-box-rock-2

Here is a Pemco (Hong Kong manufactured in the 80s) mechanical reefer and note the odd half-filled stirrups. Chops- is the Planters a mechanical reefer?

and the mechanical end detail

I suspect that Chops' car is made from revised and dumbed down Pemco molds (note filled stirrups). I know many old Roco and AHM molds wound up in Slovenia, under Mehano's use. So why not Pemco's?

Fischer's. Made in Slovenia. Modern car compared to the Tyco plugger - roller bearings and no roof walks.

Is that one a mechanical reefer? Can you post an end photo?

Love that old time script used in Cushion Underframe. Looks just like the one used on C&O streamliners.

Yes, a mechanical reefer. It's exactly the same as the Planters/Santa Fe one above. One end has the refrigeration unit exactly like the Pemco Sante Fe photo, the other end is a plain boxcar end like the Planters one. When I saw the Made in Slovenia stamp I just had to dig out my Fischer's one for the COTW.

You're spot on with the Pemco mold. The Slovenia one has the same tooling defect on the corner (note the Pemco diagonal shot near the top right edge between the 4th and 5th rivets on the smooth part). The defect is slightly larger on my one. It's only on that side at the fridge end, not the handbrake end or the other side. On mine, there's also another defect at the top of the second panel near the roofline on the other side (still the same end).

Wow, interesting updates. So, maybe this car has a PEMCO heritage?
That would be cool; I love PEMCO. Yes, it is exactly that, with the
reefer engine on the end.

That is definitely C&O inspired. the script cushion underframe appeared on boxcars and coil cars.

And on boxcars! Very cool paint job. I suspect this will be on my shopping list at the next train show or run to the LHS! Thanks to that photo, jward!
