I recently acquired a Tyco 4-8-0 and was wondering if anybody here has converted one of these or the similar 4-6-0 to DCC? If so, what decoder did you use? Do you have any tips/ pointers on this installation? How did it run after the conversion?

Haha. This fool has a soldering iron and a multimeter and knows how to use them. It also helps to have formal training in electronics as well. When I do tackle this project I will be sure to take photos and post them here.

I've done a few 4 -6-2 Pacific's with DCC. I replaced the old motor with a modern can motor. The decoder I typically use is a Digitraxx DZ123. Very small and compact and can handle the electrical load. Super easy wiring. The cab has plenty of room for a HO scale decoder too, I just prefer the smaller DZ decoder.
I have a 4-6-0 on my desk waiting for the decoder. I already have the can motor installed. The decoder will live in the tender under the fake wood load. Cab is a little tight on the 4-6-0.
They run great with the can motor, not to snappy with the old style stock motor. If you try the old style motor change the magnet to a Neo magnet, it'll help.

Thanks, eagle. am familiar with the DZ123 and the current version DZ126. They are my go to decoder for the Bachmann 0-6-0/2-6-0/ 2-6-2. It's a good choice where space is tight. I may opt for the more expensive DZ165 to get the back EMF to make it smoother running.
I've seen the can motor conversion kits for the 4-6-2/ 2-8-2. Will these also work in the 4-8-0? I have a diecast 4-6-2, so I was eventually going to get one of those motors for it. But it's pretty far down the long list of projects I need to complete.

| I'm 99% sure the same can motor kit will fit the 4-8-0. The one I have in the 4-6-0 is the same as the Pacific.
