My LOTW is going to be a triple header. To start, Great Northern F7As #479 and 377A running light through a G.N. yard to pick up the Empire Builder in 1968.
My third LOTW will be my Mantua GP20 shell.
I believe this unit to be either some sort of preproduction or finalo test batch. I don't believe Mantua really offered kit forms of the GP20, maybe it was ordered from a parts catalog? Whatever this is, it's an oddball piece.
My reasoning for staing this is:
1. The paint is somewhat crude, however it resembles Mantua paint in color and texture in every way. It also matches the Mantua G.N. GP20 paint, however it is slightly skewed, not unreasonable for a prepod or final test.
2. There's bare spots on the inside of the shell that match another post-tyco Mantua paint job exactly. I imagine these are from the paint stands/clamps Mantua used to paint them.
3. The dynamic brake hatch, running gear, detail parts, and EVEN THE BELL are missing, which is odd. Plus the screwholes for the fuel tank are UNTAPPED.
4. Probably one of the most convincing items. There was never any lettering, numbering or the Mantua G.N. sticker applied anywhere on this unit, nor was there any trace of them. Usually tampograph machines would leave an imprint in model's paint job.

I got a friend named Bob N. He is quite a kitbasher and refinisher of HO trains. I got one of his locos this past Saturday. It is a C&O GP-30. Got to get a hand rail set for it. frank

Here's a Lionel branded Athearn rubber-band engine. I changed the bands today and oiled everything. It runs real nice.

A Rivarossi E-8 painted for the American Orient Express. The front end has some damage and the traction tires are missing so I have a bit of work to do to get this in running shape.

Very interesting pieces this week. I have been surprised, time and again, how smoothly those rubber band drives work. The bands seem to store kinetic energy and release it when it would otherwise stutter or stall. Major pain to keep up with the dry rot the latex, however.

They're not great as engines you'd put on the shelf and run once a year, but if you keep them moving they work well enough. The simplicity is nice, and without a geared drivetrain they're relatively quiet.
