i am in process of building a n gauge layout, with no particular railroad to start with, more like a preserved railroad, with many railroads to start with,12ft x 2ft at the widest point, one end will have the locos, roundhouse and turntable, other end will be where the stock will be kept, with 2 or more tracks running the length, with possibilities of extensions at either end, thats the idea at the moment anyway,as i have got to boxes of track/points etc,in the mean time i have a coffee table layout for kids (including myself to have fun with

You will have plenty of enjoyment using N scale as the size benefits show Ken.
You can do more with smaller space. Disadvantages are minimum at least in my opinion.
Every scale has benefits to enjoy for any modeler.
