Then and now! My 2 different HObbyline #415 Surburbanite Union Pacific train sets. At first, I had no UP H12-44 so I used the HObbyline version of the locomotive to power the three-car UPRR set.

You can see it is on my last layout which was doomed by the new run installation. Then I got luckey and found a UPRR version of the Locomotive by HObbyline.

Two views. Same three cars, Different Layouts, and different locos. So that is my this week, Set of the Week!

the bottom left 2 locos are DCC!
I think I am missing the control thing for the DCC

Busss, the powerpack which controls it is right there in the center. Notice how it's got all those different buttons?

I'm not sure what address the locos are set to. Try the cab numbers

My SOTW is a Gützold (East German) H0 SVT 137 made in the mid 1960's. I received this in the mail today, and the mechanism was extremely filthy. So, I spent about 10-20 minutes cleaning it out with a paintbrush and a dental pick. After that, I lubricated the mechanism and whatnot, and sure enough, after some other adjustments, it runs fairly well, albeit slow. The picture I'm about to post is from the Ebay listing for this exact loco I received. I will probably post some more pictures at some point this week.

East. Gützold was, funnily enough, a privately owned model railroad manufacturing company in East Germany which lasted from 1953 until they were absorbed into the government owned Piko in I believe 1973. This engine was originally released in 1963 and lasted all the way to the end of Gützold and was then made by Piko until sometime in the 1980's. There are a surprising amount of things on this model that remind me of old school Athearn. The way the gears are, the set up of the motor and mechanism, the metal bars functioning in the place of electrical wires, etc. The motor, though, reminds me a lot of the well known Rivarossi motors from the 1970's. The worst thing about this model is how fidgety the metal bars going between the three cars are, making it difficult to get all the lights and everything working properly all the time throughout the set. However, the middle car (the actual locomotive, more or less) can function by itself, so it's not really hindered by the aforementioned issue. Of course, if I tinker with those metal bars enough, the lights will probably all work as intended, but frankly, I don't have the energy to do that for the time being since I already spent a great deal of time getting to work at all. Nice loco for its age, though!

Thank you! Yeah, the real life locomotive began production in 1932 and apparently continued production until 1939 due to well, WW2. Oh yeah, and I forgot to mention that my set came with some emblems for the Czechoslovak, Soviet, and East German railways. I might add the East German crest to the front and back of the loco, because it would look pretty neat. Also, I've finally delivered on my promise to get pictures of this thing! Here you guys go.

I have no idea if those decals are supposed to come off with water or a pencil. Also, in case you guys are wondering, the watch I'm wearing on my wrist in the last photo is a Seiko SNK 805 I got a couple of years back. Great watch.

That is a remarkable piece. I wonder who would be able to afford
such a thing in the GDR. If you add emblems, would you custom
print them?

I cast my ballot with Blax, TBH, BTW.

Yeah, I'm definitely heavily leaning in that direction. Also, Chops, model railroading was a very popular hobby in East Germany. Lots of East German households had a fair amount of trains and a proper layout. Granted, none of it was nearly as fancy as what people were building in West Germany, but people were generally able to build sophisticated layouts. At least, that's what it seems like from the research I've done about these locos. Although I'd definitely argue that the old Gützold and Piko locos are surprisingly good, they're definitely not up to western standards, for the most part. I would compare them quality wise to somewhere between Lima and Rivarossi, depending on the model.

I read somewhere that the GDR officially sanctioned model railroading,
so as to keep people from thinking about the dismal nature of
communism.

I wouldn't be surprised. Probably the best thing to come out of the GDR was their model trains.
