New material to listen to! I'd not heard of Mars Volta, but will now!

Listened to them all, rather like "C'mon, ride the train." A lot of eclectic melodies.

Bad, bad business on the Western Front. Got to listen to this, in between

Hey, do you have any French rock and roll? The only thing I ever stumbled
over, and liked very much, was a little Plastic Bertrand, "Ca Place Por Moi."

Up to now I have only posted music released in this century. But it's time for an obscure blast from the past.

The band FM came out of the same Toronto music scene as Rush, and explored similar musical territory with science fiction themes of a dystopian world, Their music is similarly complex, but with a vocalist whose voice is kept below the hysteria range, and thus far less irritating. But FM relied mainly on synthesizers and other keyboards instead of guitars, a fact they proudly pointed out on their records. This is not some cheesy 80s synth-pop, but an exploration of where, in the right hands and with the right inspiration, keyboard based music could go. At this point in the band's career, the keys were mainly played by an odd character with the stage name Nash the Slash, who appeared in concert wrapped in mummy bandages and wearing a top hat. His name refers to his proficiency on electric violin, an instrument used alot in the late 1970s but which sadly has faded from view.

This song is Black Noise, the title track from their debut album. It is an exploration into state of the art (for 1978) soundscapes and instrumental virtuosity. Sadly for the band, the world at large was far more interested in punk and disco and their space age sound never caught on.

I think it was filmed at a train museum in either Wisconsin or Illinois.

The Marble Machine is one of the most remarkable things I've seen in
a long while. The engineering and the craftsmanship is unfathomable.

Reminds me, a little, of Ben Franklin's Glass Armonica.

One of the things I dislike about classic rock radio is its limited scope. There is no denying many of the songs played are great. But 40 plus years of hearing the same few songs endlessly repeated has made me tired of them.

I grew up in an era when those songs were new and fresh. But times were alot different back then. DJs had alot more control over what they played, and free form radio was a great thing. You never knew what you'd hear next. This experience with the quirky songs once played has greatly influenced my taste in music, and has led to a lifelong passion for discovering the music that radio DOESN'T play.

Here is one of those quirky songs that has been forgotten. If only more stuff like this would get played again.....
