I went to the local train club in western Queens tonight.

Went back to the club after a three year hiatus.

I also took two videos of the one train operating tonight.

HO scale layout is 50 percent complete with scenery.
Most Friday nights there are operating sessions.

Located near 44 Street and 35 Avenue in Long Island City. Near the R and N subway lines.
They meet most Friday nights and they will not let some illness slow them down.
However there were only two members at the club last night.
I guess the other members do not want to take chances.

Another video from a fellow railfan.

Any chance you have any more pics of the trailing Empire Valley F unit in the first photo? It's in the EXACT way I was planning on decorating my F unit for my RR. I've gotta get a better look!

More photos from three weeks ago. I forgot to update this thread.

I did not see other photos of the engine you saw Alex.
I will try to revisit the club layout soon.

Internet photos of the engine you are interested in Alex. Not my photos.

Hope these photos help you complete your engine project.

Wow, It could almost be the Blaxland's sister Railroad!

I love all the gadgets and things atop that other F Unit.
(I already Finished my Blaxland F - Unit, I was just interested)

Let's see:
Box behind bell is air conditioner.
Behind it is a dynamic brake fan. While model was probably molded with 36 inch fan, late F7s and F9s had 48 inch fans, but the low type, as on 1034 in door behind 1023 instead of the probably railroad shop added high type that part represents. I can't tell from either the image or memory if the new high fans represent the "Q" fans, which were a 1980s era noise reduction product.

Second high fan behind it would be one of the radiator fans, with model part again probably representing a railroad shop change from factory original, once again, as seen on 1034 in background.

There there is a different style of spark arrestor on each of the 2 exhaust stacks.

Then finally is an extension on the steam generator vent.

So, basically what we've got here is a model whose details tell a story of long years of use, repair, adaptation, and upgrade.

And a photo well composed to illustrate the railroad's changes to the factory original configuration.

What I can't deduce from photo angle is whether the 4 post 'handrail' structure is attached to the locomotive roof as representation of an inductive trainphone antenna such as PRR employed, or, is an actual handrail on an elevated access platform beside the background locomotive.

B-unit trailing 1023 is one of the FT units, a b-unit, the original F-units which started the FT, F2, F3, F5, F7, F9, FP7, FP9, series of both A and B carbodies.

A trivia note about the FT, the roof fans in those were originally belt driven then a change was made to an electric motor on each fan.

And for those who might not know, on the FT those roof boxes are where the dynamic brake grids were while on later F-units they were under the roof right behind the cab, where larger fan is on 1034 in background. Locos built without dynamic braking would have plain roof there.

Also, locos built without steam generator for passenger car heating would have plain aft roof hatch where these 2 have all the steam generator vents.

1023 has an added square hatch this side of that panel, which is not typical on the prototype - I'm not 100% sure but think some railroad modified at least some of its Fs with a water fill point there.

Yes, your suspicion is correct, I used to be deeply in to F-units and their history.

Pretty much! Rather less so now than 20 years ago, but, yes.

Hey, trains were created for nerds, why else would the inventors have gone through all that hassle.

I went back on Friday after work to see any progress. No trains running tonight.
Just necessary repairs. Still I saw some cool equipment on display tonight.

Interesting to see any changes in the next few months.
