Normally I'm pretty much an expert when it comes to fixing TYCO however these models are totally out of my wheelhouse.

I'm currently sitting on a fairly nice 4-6-2 Royal Blue that has some broken valve gear. While I could swap the chassis out for an identical replacement I had a "why not?" idea come to mind. Can I swap the motor, diecast shell, front and rear trucks to the 2-8-2 chassis?

Does anyone know if the 4-6-2 chassis and the 2-8-2 are identical? I believe they are but I don't have any Tyco 2-8-2s to test this on.

The trailing truck and motor are the same between the 4-6-2 and the 2-8-2. The 4-6-2's boiler almost fits, but not quite. The distance between the front and rear mounting screws is just a little longer on the 2-8-2. Mantua did offer a "light Mikado" where they kind of made it fit, but the smoke stack does not align with the center of the cylinder saddle. You might be able to replicate that by drilling and tapping a second hole in the saddle, but it wouldn't look right if you realize that the smoke stack is usually centered above the saddle so the exhaust nozzle lines up. The pilot trucks are definitely NOT interchangeable.
