I have this Bachmann (China) engine that runs really strong and smooth. But when I put a load on it , seems like the gears may be slipping on the axles. Judging by hand, the rear axle gear seems to slip fairly easily, but it's not loose or sloppy. Any suggestions of fixes??

 Throw it over the garden wall. I've spent a lot of money and time
trying to fix these junk Bachmann motors. Too small for a door stop.

you're right, Jeff.. These are cheap engines and I believe I must be expecting too much from them... Guess these are Ok for pulling 3 or 4 cars around... After more study I think these engines just sit and spin the wheels from too much of a load... I put a little weight on the engine and it goes. However, I was hoping to make a short video but won't be doing that for now...

I do not know if this could even work, but perhaps an Epoxy Solution or Liquid Cement could serve as a buffer on the axle itself - preventing the gear from slipping off.....

I've tried that, RP, don't hold worth a fig. My constant lament with
Bachmann- both OO and HO is the truly horrid poor quality of their
transmissions, most typically drive gears, which render otherwise
beautiful units into worthless junkers. I've read scattered reports
that Bachmann is doing better, but my most recent experience with
some of Jimmie's locomotives (sent back three times) is not so good.
Also, Stanley's DCC steamer turned out to be a worthless junk with
factory decoder troubles. On the other hand, the Acela performed
beautifully for the years I owned it.

I have narrowed it down to me, expecting these cheap engines to pull too much of a load. This engine pulls 5 or 6 cars ok... I'm not sure if I have any engines that will pull 11 or 12 cars as I was trying to do. Betting my Tyco 630's wont do it...

Well, that's something. Maybe some weight, n'est pas?
My most recent misadventure was the axle gears on a
NOS locomotive actually crumbling after a yard. Looking
at the photo, it might also appear that the center gear, with
the smaller one to the right, that doesn't seem to mate with
anything, looks a bit cantilevered in relation to the one next.
I don't know if that has anything to do with anything  .

This in the particular is my latest ongoing Bachmann headache. I bought this one thinking
I could swap out a NIB chassis for a Rock Island shell, and it ran for about a yard before the
gears crumbled like stale cookies and spewed themselves forth. I am told an Athearn
SD 40 type chassis might work. Anyone got one for sale or trade?

Hey, Justin... A man who owned a storage unit building gave me quite a few Bachmann pieces about 12 years ago that was left in a unit. The two F unit engine pull 5 or 6 cars ok and fly on the track with no load. But I wont be surprised now when the gears break... My plan was to pull 11 piggyback flats for a short clip. Wont do it even with brand new traction rings on them...
