Hello All, I just picked up 3 tin metal passenger shells decorated for the U.P. They look a lot like the old Varney metal cars, but have different window patterns and are built slightly differently. There is one coach, a diner, and an observation. All cars are “shorties” (no, not the old Herkimer/OK cast metal, these are shaped tin). Does anyone know of a manufacturer that made something like this? Thanks, Chris

They just arrived today. The bottoms , roofs and side panels all seem to be welded together somehow. You can see the little indentions and burns at the weld points. I can no longer seem to post pics here—-for years I did easily (click on the camera, go to my files, etc), but for the life of me I can’t seem to get it to work now. Has something changed here?

Check your photo file name. If it has any spaces at all in the file name, it won't post. Eliminate the spaces and they should post. Also make sure the size is not over 1,000 pixels by 700-800 pixels

These may be a Japanese knockoff of the Varney cars from a company called Tetsudo. They cloned the Athearn metal 40' boxcar and several other kits in the mid-late 50s.

Thanks, That’s interesting. They do look like they were “inspired” by the Varneys. The big difference besides window placement is that the roof, sides and floor were all welded into one piece. Don’t know if ends were originally provided—I actually cut the ends off some old LifeLike/Penn Line plastic cars, trimmed them up, and they work pretty well. I’ll post pics when I can. I don’t think it’s possible from this iPad.

Because the end pieces are not made of plastic, they are not varney. Tenshodo also made cars of that type. They made 6 or 7 different ones. Frank

I agree, those are Tenshodo passenger cars. They look like they are in good shape too!
