This problem has vexed me for a while. I first saw this HO Peabody hopper in Jimmy's collection, and was bemused that in some distant time he had taken a felt tip marker and added this black blob to the center of the car, both sides. Then we are up in Riudoso, New Mexico at Trains and More, one of the last extant model train shops where you can find old, cool stuff, and there in the bargain box are two more of these hops with identical black smudges! What gives? Upon the most careful scrutiny, I might make out a lump of coal surrounded top and bottom with a red flame- maybe. Is that what this black smudge supposed to be??? A burning lump of coal?

That is a Peabody logo. If you're able to see flickr pictures here's an example: http://www.flickriver.com/photos/25111976@N03/34451558726/

Well thanks, I did get a view of that. For the longest time I had assumed that kid with a marker was accessorizing his Peabody, until I saw multiple smudges on different manufacturers. Thought maybe an epidemic of kid smudging was taking place.
