Hey everyone! Been a while since I've been here, but I decided to log in just on a lark and see what's been going on the last several months. I think I'm going to be back around here more often again, so I thought I'd share a bit of an update.
I'm now in my sophomore year of college, possibly changing majors to History since that's always been the only thing I'm actually passionate about, watching all my friends drop out or transfer out. I've spent this semester so far getting my life straightened out after a few too many months of heavy stuff going on. I'm finally getting myself involved in the local rail preservation and model railroad scene here in Altoona, PA. If anyone happens to be in the area or traveling through, I'd love to give a grand tour of the city and the things I do here!
I'm now a member of two different model railroad clubs/museums, I work with the Railroaders' Memorial Museum (currently on hold due to museum management losing its collective the other dark meat), and I've recently been meeting people to get in with the East Broad Top and even the T1 Trust via a friend. The museum layout and the larger club both run mainly my rebuilt cars. Just went to my first NMRA convention in Harrisburg a couple weekends ago, and it was an amazing experience (even if I was the only one there under 40 ) I think I'm finally going places with this hobby!
Definitely going to be posting some of this semester's projects when I get a chance, I look forward to seeing what everyone else is up to!

Hey Connor! Nice to see a fellow millennial interested in model railroading, for I actually just joined up to the TF back in August and am a Junior in High School! I do hope that college continues to proceed successfully for you, and that your influence in model railroading keeps getting stronger, in Altoona, PA.
Can't wait to see what you have in store to share with all of us, and officially, welcome back!
Thanks,
-RP

Welcome back, PRR. The McNeal's are from Altoona. Is the Penn Hotel still there? I stopped there on business about 30 years ago; my grandfather McNeal helped build it as a summer job back in '20's.
Not easy to determine what life course to take. I enjoy history, so did my father, but the question worth asking is how much bang do I get for my buck? You may be passionate about history, I am too, but is teaching a roomful of distracted teenagers something worth pursuing?
Back in my day, they told me to go to college and get a degree in anything- like a degree was a passport to a better future. What a crock of baloney. The people that say that are college reps trying to keep a job.
A two year degree at a community college, where you get a trade in HVAC, plumbing, or electricity is worth a lot more than a history BA. Figure out your life while you are making green, hard cash.
Nor do I recommend the military. I see a lot of people go into it with the idea that they are going to get some great trade skill. First, you are on military time. They literally own you 24/7 and are not likely to let you forget it. Second, you can spend a LOT of time doing KP and picking up cigarette butts, especially if you fail out of any specialty school you MIGHT have gotten hold of. I'm not knocking our military- but I will tell you or any other young person- it is a hard and demanding life.
At the end of the day it's about what the Army wants, not what you want- and if that is an issue for you it will be bad. Also, vets, and I am one, do not get any recognition or additional respect by the civilian community. Don't believe me, ask a vet.
If you're a people person, RN's start out making over 60K, more in larger cities like NY or LA or Houston.
History is great stuff. I read it every chance I get. Make a living at it? I'm no Ron Chernow.
