I was almost in a pickle, deciding what car to post, but in Heinz-sight, this one is the latest to arrive to me, so I'll relish posting it today. I think this will go good with my Oscar Mayer car and the Weiner semi-truck. Hot dog!

My COTW is this Tyco hopper car:
Nothing rare about it. There were loads of these made, but they illustrate an idea. When I was starting in model railroading, the "toy" equipment and the "hobby" equipment were not poles apart. Brands like Tyco, AHM and Bachmann sold train sets to the toy market. Brands like Athearn and Roundhouse sold equipment for grown up hobbyists.
This car came in a train set back in 1971. It had plastic wheels and truck mounted couplers. As I migrated away from a toy-like layout toward the Athearn/Roundhouse world, it was not hard to stick metal wheelsets and body-mounted Kadees on cars like this and, with a little paint and weathering, have something that can credibly stand alongside the "serious" brands.
This gradual, low cost, low commitment drift from toy to hobby was my path into model railroading. I don't think that a person trying to get from cheap train set to adult hobby has as smooth a path with so few train sets around and the higher bar created by the upscale equipment available today. I was lucky to come along when I did.

Nice grouping so far!
This is my find of the day. Found it in a thrift store crammed with a bunch of toy trucks and stuff in a bag for $2.99. I paid $2.99, took out the caboose and donated the rest right back!
I searched in vain for the locomotive, lol.

That "Silver Streak" is sweet find! Silver Streak was a chrome plated engine & caboose. Must be some kind of prototype caboose?

It's not a prototype but it is rare. It and an F7 were made for the Canadian Market only, and for a limited number of years.
My first set was the "other" Silver Streak you speak of, and I have that Loco and caboose as well ;)

Really neato caboose, Dan. I love the way "new" Tyco keeps popping up. Almost would seem infinite in the varieties and gradients.

Definitely! I saw it on Brian's site actually, and almost had a Loco/caboose set, but the guy sold it before I could get it. The loco is pretty scarce, a Canada-Only run as far as I know.
