Just bought a early Bachmann GS4 4-8-4. Has the usual cracking. Was wondering if the shell could fit the newer mechanisms?

Justin,
I moved a old Bachmann Santa Fe 4-8-4 pancake chassis body to a NYC 4-8-4 can motor chassis a few years back. By moving the Santa Fe cylinders and valve gear it was a drop in change. I suspect that the 4-8-4 chassis are all the same for the second generation locomotives. I have no experence with the newest 4-8-4 locomotives.

Identification of the 2nd generation drives:

Speaking as someone doing the reverse (bodging a newer shell onto a first-gen chassis), it should be able to fit but you might need to relocate screw lugs.
