Does anyone know if this car was made by Athearn or Rivarossi? Whichever it was, do you know if those companies sold this car also, or was it made especially for Lionel? It seems like I see only the Lionel car.

Lionel produced the car, from 1959 thru 1961. Athearn and Rivarossi were not involved.

Oh, that's interesting. I was under the impression that all of Lionel's HO stuff was made by other companies. Were 1959-61 the years that Lionel was doing their own cars?

In general, Rivarossi made trains for Lionel in 1957. Athearn made trains for Lionel from 1958 thru 1959. Lionel made their own line from 1959 to 1966.
