I use denatured alcohol in the Lifelike track cleaner and it works pretty well. I haven't had the tank on it for quite some time and just put the alcohol directly on the pad, so I can't vouch for whether it's safe for the paint.

I think that the LL track cleaner is basically rubbing alcohol
with a little dye thrown in.

Track cleaning is a bit like religion: everyone holds to their
own.

My track cleaning religion is Wahl's Hair Clipper Oil and $3
buys a ten year supply. It cleans, de-oxidizes, and prevents
re-oxidization. Doesn't hurt plastic, and doesn't cause
slippage, and some of my locomotive stock is pretty
light weight (single driver British 4-2-0, for example).

Sounds crazy, I know, but I swear on it.

My bud Moose likes Rail Zip, which costs like $20 for an ounce,
but I think it is very much like Wahl's Clipper Oil.
