There's a misconception that Gilbert used Marx HO dies when they entered the Pikemaster era. This is not true at all. While the units are similar in appearance, that's where it ends. The Gilbert dies were copied from the Marx drawings but there were changes made and none of the parts are exact copies although some parts will interchange. Here are some comparison pics of a Gilbert L-3003 with a Marx Santa Fe and also vs couple pictures comparing a Gilbert 31025 with a Marx 4000 NYC. You will notice the rivet size and counts are different, the ribs on the bottom of the nose above the skirt are different also. The number boards are more pronounced in the Gilbert models, horns are slightly different, ladders are longer and open on the Marx and the actual shell dimensions are different not only in height but also windshield shape and size. The roofs are shorter on the Gilbert models also...

Most unique and interesting pieces, interesting comparison. That ATSF F unit, is that really the deep pink it appears to be or just a trick of light?

Looks almost like a fluorescent pink. Rather striking.

That's my junk camera and screwy fluorescent lighting. The engine is actually new and in perfect condition.

Well, leave one in a windowsill long enough and you could end up with a magenta loco

I have an extra SF shell, will do just that. If it turns pink, I will run it.
