Is there a preference as to 33" or 36" wheels, my assumption is that whatever I use, they should be steel not brass. I will be putting surface mount resistors on them for block detection and body mounting the couplers.

Most freight equipment uses 33" wheels, though a few cars use the bigger 36" wheels.

If you refer to HO scale, most metal wheels seem to be either brass or nickel. Nickel probably stays a little cleaner.

Thanks, I used the term steel instead of nickle silver, and yes it is HO gauge.

33" general freight
36" high capacity hoppers, passenger cars
28" high cubes, auto-racks

These are just general rules, refer to prototype plans for ribbet counting. I just installed 36s on my TYCO cylindrical hoppers and they roll and look spectacular....

This is especially important when you're building switch frogs.
