The seller found the right buyer. This is what inspires some sellers to post incredibly high prices - hoping for that right buyer/collector to come across it and pay whatever. And the neophyte collector that may not know any better.

Of course in this world of $500 locos, why not?

Very true Jerry. I thought $500 for the 1957 T-10 set with wooden box was "reasonable" considering its contents and rarity (sold in June of 14). I realize the military set was only produced for 2 or 3 years, but I never thought as set from 60's would fetch so much. So much for the Tyco haters saying Tyco is worthless!

The components in the Military Set are not rare. The reason it went for $500 is the condition of the set. It is rare to find it in "Like New" to Mint condition in the set box.

Not rare. I've seen one each of the boxcar, flatcar, and bobber caboose, in ever. When I had my bobber, some guys got fighting over one on eBay and just that caboose sold for a touch over $200. I got $75 for mine.
